Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike near Walton Hills, Ohio, requires a different approach than fishing the Cuyahoga for smallmouth. While pike aren't incredibly abundant, they're present in some of the larger, slower-moving sections of the river and in connected ponds or backwaters. Spring, right after ice-out, and late fall are your best bets. Pike are ambush predators and are often found near weed beds or submerged timber. A good strategy is to target areas where smaller baitfish congregate. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, or crankbaits are effective lures. If you have access to a kayak or canoe, it can greatly improve your ability to reach prime pike habitat along the Cuyahoga. Be prepared for some serious fights, as these pike are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs. Remember to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs.
