Northern Pike

While not a primary destination for Northern Pike, the Maumee River near Waterville, Ohio, does offer a chance to tangle with these toothy predators. Pike tend to be more opportunistic feeders, so they can be found throughout the river system. Look for them in areas with dense vegetation, submerged timber, and slower-moving water, particularly in backwater areas or near creek mouths. Spring and fall are generally the best times to target pike, as they are more active in cooler water temperatures. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures. A steel leader is essential to prevent bite-offs. Farnsworth Metropark provides good access to the river, and launching a small boat or kayak can open up more fishing opportunities. Pike in the Maumee are typically not trophy-sized, but they can still provide an exciting fight.
