Northern Pike

Targeting northern pike near Westlake, Ohio, requires a bit of strategic thinking. While not as abundant as in more northern regions, pike can be found in the larger reservoirs and river systems that feed into Lake Erie. The Rocky River, for example, holds a population of pike that move into the lower reaches during the cooler months. Look for them around submerged timber, creek mouths, and deeper pools. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall are your best bets, as pike are ambush predators that thrive in colder water. Use large spinnerbaits, spoons, or crankbaits to cover water quickly. A steel leader is essential, as pike have incredibly sharp teeth. A local's secret? Focus on areas where smaller baitfish congregate, as pike won't be far behind. Be prepared for a fight; even smaller pike are aggressive and powerful. Access to the Rocky River is good via the Metroparks system.
