Northern Pike

Looking to tangle with Northern Pike near Windham, Ohio? While larger lakes further north might be more renowned, the smaller reservoirs and slow-moving sections of the Cuyahoga River watershed in the area offer surprisingly good pike fishing. Spring, just after ice-out, is prime time as pike move into shallower weedy areas to spawn. Focus on places like the backwaters of the Michael J. Kirwan Reservoir. Fall is another excellent time, as pike actively feed to prepare for winter. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are all effective, and don't be afraid to use a wire leader – these fish have sharp teeth! Public access to the reservoir is available, with boat ramps for launching. Be aware that the pike population here isn't huge, so patience and persistence are key. The average size is respectable, however, with the potential for fish in the 5-8 pound range, and occasionally larger.
