Northern Pike

While not as abundant as other species, Northern Pike can be found in the waters around Dauphin, Pennsylvania, particularly in the Susquehanna River and its backwaters. These ambush predators thrive in areas with submerged vegetation and structure. Spring and early fall are generally the best times to target pike, as they are actively feeding in cooler water temperatures. Look for them in weedy areas, near fallen trees, and along the edges of sloughs. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures. Fishing with live bait, such as shiners, can also be productive. A local tip is to explore the Conodoguinet Creek where it meets the Susquehanna; this area can hold pike. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have sharp teeth. While pike fishing in this area may require patience, the reward of landing one of these apex predators is well worth the effort. Remember to handle them carefully to ensure their survival after release.
