Northern Pike

Northern pike fishing near Wesleyville offers a thrilling experience on Lake Erie's shallower, weedy areas and tributaries. While not the first species that comes to mind when you think of Lake Erie, pike thrive in the warmer backwaters and near the mouths of creeks and rivers that flow into the lake. Spring (April-May) is prime time as pike move into these areas to spawn. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective. Don't be afraid to use large presentations – pike are ambush predators! Presque Isle Bay, easily accessible from several launches around Erie, is a good starting point. Be prepared for some toothy critters; a wire leader is essential. Local tip: Focus on areas with submerged vegetation and slow-moving water, especially after a spring rain. Expect to find pike in the 2-5lb range, with larger specimens possible.
