Northern Pike
Looking to tangle with Northern Pike near East Thermopolis? The Bighorn River offers some surprisingly good opportunities. Pike fishing here is best in the spring, just after ice-out (if applicable), and again in the fall as water temperatures cool. These are the times when pike are most actively feeding. Focus your efforts in areas with slower currents, such as backwaters, sloughs, and near weed beds. Pike are ambush predators, so they'll be lurking where they can easily surprise their prey. For access, consider launching a small boat or kayak at one of the public access points along the Bighorn; this will allow you to cover more water and reach prime pike habitat. Large, flashy lures like spoons, spinners, and crankbaits are effective for attracting pike. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs, as pike have very sharp teeth. The Bighorn pike are known to be aggressive fighters, so be prepared for a battle!
