While not as abundant as in some other regions, you can find pike in the Salt River and some of the associated sloughs and backwaters. Spring, just after ice-out, is prime time as pike move into shallow, weedy areas to spawn. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are all effective lures for triggering aggressive strikes. Don't be afraid to experiment with bright colors and flashy presentations. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs. Access can be challenging in some areas, requiring wading or the use of a small boat or kayak. Pay attention to water levels, as they can fluctuate significantly. The pike in this area tend to be ambush predators, so focus your efforts on areas with plenty of vegetation and structure. A local tip: look for areas where smaller tributaries enter the main river, as these can attract baitfish and, in turn, pike.
