While not as widely known as some other Missouri fisheries, perch fishing near Jefferson City can offer some pleasant surprises. Focus your efforts on the smaller lakes and ponds surrounding the city, as well as the backwaters and slower-moving sections of the Missouri River. Spring and fall are generally the best times to target perch, as they move into shallower water to feed and spawn. Look for areas with submerged vegetation or woody debris, as these provide cover and attract baitfish. A simple slip-bobber rig with a small jig or worm is often effective. Local tip: Perch in this area can be quite sensitive to water temperature changes, so be prepared to adjust your depth and location accordingly. Early morning and late evening hours often produce the best results. Also, smaller jigs tipped with waxworms or mealworms can be irresistible.
