Northern Pike

While not as prevalent as other species, targeting Northern Pike near Jefferson City can be a rewarding challenge. Select areas of the Lake of the Ozarks that have large creek arms with standing timber and submerged weeds. Early spring, just after ice-out (if applicable), and late fall are often the best times to target these predators as they are most active in cooler water temperatures. Large swimbaits, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits are effective lures. Pike are ambush predators, so focus on areas with cover. A steel leader is essential to prevent bite-offs. A practical tip: check the upper ends of the Osage River arm of the Lake of the Ozarks. While the numbers aren't high, the pike in this region can reach impressive sizes. Be prepared for a powerful strike and a thrilling fight.
