Rainbow Trout

Though Holloway, Minnesota, isn't widely known for trout fishing, determined anglers can find opportunities to catch Rainbow Trout in some of the local streams and potentially in a few of the smaller, stocked lakes. These stockings are typically done by the DNR to supplement the fishing opportunities. Spring and fall are the prime times to target rainbows, as the cooler water temperatures trigger increased activity. Early morning and late evening hours are often the most productive. Small spinners, spoons, and live bait like worms or powerbait are popular choices. Fly fishing with nymphs and dry flies can also be effective, especially during insect hatches. Access to some of these streams can be limited, so research ahead of time and look for public access points. Always check the Minnesota DNR fishing regulations for specific rules regarding trout fishing in the area, as some locations may have special restrictions or catch-and-release requirements. A local tip: the rainbows in these waters can be somewhat skittish, so use light line and avoid making excessive noise. The trout are generally smaller, but still fun to catch.
