If you're chasing Smallmouth Bass in Minnesota, the Holloway area offers some under-the-radar opportunities. While not a renowned smallmouth destination, the Chippewa River and its connecting lakes and streams hold populations of these hard-fighting fish. Look for rocky areas, current breaks, and submerged structure. Spring and early summer, before the water gets too warm, are excellent times to target smallmouth. They'll be actively feeding and preparing to spawn. Topwater lures like poppers and walking baits can be incredibly exciting, especially during low-light conditions. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs are also effective options. As the water warms in the summer, focus on deeper areas with current. A local tip: the Chippewa River can be challenging to navigate in some areas due to shallow water and submerged obstacles, so a smaller boat or kayak is recommended. The smallmouth in this area are known for their aggressive strikes and acrobatic jumps, making them a rewarding target for anglers of all skill levels. Don't be surprised to find some decent-sized fish in these relatively unpressured waters.
