Rainbow Trout

While the Lake of the Ozarks near Bagnell, Missouri, is better known for its warm-water species, you can find stocked rainbow trout in the Niangua River, a short drive away. The Niangua offers a different angling experience, with clear, cool waters flowing through scenic Ozark landscapes. The best time to target rainbows is in the cooler months, from late fall through early spring, particularly after stocking events. Look for deeper pools and runs, especially near submerged logs and boulders. Small spinners, spoons, and live bait like worms or PowerBait are effective. Public access is available at several points along the river, including Bennett Spring State Park, a bit further upstream, which offers excellent trout fishing opportunities. Be aware that special regulations may apply, so check the Missouri Department of Conservation website before you go. The trout in the Niangua are generally stocked at a catchable size, providing good action for anglers of all skill levels.
