If you're looking for Rainbow Trout in southern Missouri, don't overlook the waters near Ellington. While not as widely known as some of the larger Ozark streams, the smaller, spring-fed creeks and rivers in this area, like the upper reaches of the Black River and some of its tributaries, offer surprisingly good trout fishing. The cooler months, from late fall through early spring, are prime time, as the water stays cold enough to support the trout. The Missouri Department of Conservation stocks these streams regularly, so check their website for stocking schedules. Access can be a bit tricky, often involving gravel roads and some walking, but the solitude and potential for catching beautiful rainbows are worth the effort. A local tip: small spinners and trout magnets are very effective in the clear, fast-flowing water. Be mindful of private property boundaries and always obtain permission when necessary.
