Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike near Ellington, Missouri, presents a unique angling challenge. While not a traditional pike hotspot, the larger reservoirs and slower-moving sections of the Black River system can hold some surprises. Clearwater Lake, in particular, offers the best opportunity. Focus your efforts in the early spring, just after ice-out (if any), or in the late fall when the water cools down. Pike tend to congregate near weed beds, submerged timber, and creek channels entering the main lake. Large spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and swimbaits are your best bet. Be prepared for some heavy cover, so use sturdy tackle. A local angler's secret: try fishing the flooded timber along the upper reaches of the lake after a period of heavy rain – the pike will move into these areas to ambush prey. Remember to handle pike carefully, as they have sharp teeth and can be easily injured.
