Rainbow Trout

While Missouri might not be the first place that comes to mind for trout fishing, Cedar Hill Lakes offers a unique opportunity to target Rainbow Trout in a controlled freshwater environment. The Missouri Department of Conservation stocks these lakes, primarily during the cooler months, making fall, winter, and early spring the prime times to fish for them. Look for recently stocked areas, often announced by the MDC. A key to success here is scaling down your presentation; trout in these smaller lakes can be line-shy. Use light tackle, fluorocarbon leaders, and small spinners, spoons, or even fly-fishing gear. A local tip: Check water clarity before you go and adjust your lure color accordingly. Darker colors work well in stained water, while brighter, more natural patterns excel in clear conditions. Access is generally good around the lakes, but be mindful of private property and stick to designated fishing areas.
