Rainbow Trout

While not a renowned trout destination, Hopkins, Missouri, does offer limited opportunities for rainbow trout in some of the smaller, cooler streams that are stocked periodically by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Check the MDC's website for stocking schedules and locations near Hopkins. These are typically put-and-take fisheries, so don't expect huge holdovers, but they can provide a fun outing, especially for beginners or families. Spring, immediately after stocking, is the best time to target these rainbows. Small spinners, worms, or prepared trout baits are effective. Given the size of the streams, light tackle is essential. A lightweight rod and reel with 4-6 pound test line will do the trick. Remember that these streams can be quite small and sensitive, so practice catch and release whenever possible to help maintain the fishery. Access is generally via road crossings and public conservation areas; be sure to check regulations. A local tip: keep an eye out for areas with overhanging vegetation, as trout often seek cover in these spots.
