Rainbow Trout

While eastern Montana isn't exactly known for its trout fishing, determined anglers can find pockets of rainbow trout near Baker. Focus your efforts on the few reservoirs and impoundments in the area that are stocked, as natural reproduction is limited. Ponds like Spotted Horse Reservoir and smaller farm ponds (with permission!) can hold some surprises. Spring and fall are generally the best times to target rainbows, as water temperatures are cooler and the fish are more active. Early morning and late evening can also be productive during the warmer summer months. A lightweight spinning rod or a 5-weight fly rod will work well. For lures, try small spinners, spoons, or crankbaits. Fly anglers should pack some attractor patterns like Woolly Buggers or nymphs.
