Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout fishing near Libby centers around the Kootenai River and its tributaries, as well as Lake Koocanusa. The Kootenai is known for its strong, healthy rainbows that readily take dry flies and nymphs. Spring and fall are generally the best times to fish, with hatches of mayflies and caddis providing excellent opportunities. Lake Koocanusa also holds rainbows, which can be targeted by trolling or casting from shore. A local tip: the stretch of the Kootenai below Libby Dam is a tailwater fishery, so water levels can fluctuate depending on dam releases. Check the dam release schedule before you go to plan your trip accordingly. The rainbows in the Kootenai tend to be aggressive, so don't be afraid to use larger flies and streamers. Also, be aware of the regulations regarding catch-and-release and specific gear restrictions on certain sections of the river.
