Rainbow Trout

For rainbow trout enthusiasts, Twin Bridges, Montana, offers a wealth of opportunities. The area is renowned for its access to the Beaverhead, Big Hole, and Ruby Rivers, all of which hold healthy populations of rainbows. The Beaverhead is particularly well-known for its consistent rainbow trout fishing, with fish averaging 12-16 inches, but larger specimens are certainly possible. Spring and early summer, after runoff, are excellent times to target rainbows as they actively feed on emerging insects. A great tactic is to drift nymphs under an indicator in the riffles and runs. Access to the Beaverhead is relatively easy with several public access points along Highway 41. Be mindful of the water flows, as they can fluctuate depending on irrigation needs. Don't overlook the smaller tributaries either; these can hold surprisingly large rainbows, especially during the spawn.
