Rock Hind
While Destin, Florida, is renowned for its offshore fishing, targeting Rock Hind offers a unique inshore opportunity. These smaller members of the grouper family inhabit rocky reefs and ledges in the Gulf of Mexico, relatively close to shore. Unlike freshwater rock bass, Rock Hind are saltwater fish. The best time to target them is during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall. Look for areas with hard bottom and structure in 30-60 feet of water. Small jigs tipped with shrimp or squid, or live pinfish, are effective baits. A medium-heavy spinning or conventional rod with 20-30 lb test line is recommended, as they can be surprisingly strong fighters. Charter boats specializing in bottom fishing are readily available in Destin and can provide the necessary equipment and expertise. Be sure to check Florida's saltwater fishing regulations for size and bag limits, and be aware of any seasonal closures. They are a tasty fish and a fun alternative to the typical Destin fare.
