If you're targeting scup, also known as porgy, Point Judith, Rhode Island, offers some excellent opportunities. This area is known for its rocky bottom structure and plentiful shellfish, which scup love to feed on. Focus your efforts around the numerous rock piles, reefs, and mussel beds scattered throughout Narragansett Bay and along the coastline. Spring and fall are prime times, as scup migrate inshore during these periods. For shore anglers, the rocky points along the southern coast of Point Judith provide good access. If you're heading out on a boat, the Galilee State Pier is a convenient launch point. A local tip: scup are notorious bait stealers, so use small hooks and be prepared to lose some bait. Chumming with crushed shellfish or clam bellies can significantly improve your success rate. The scup here tend to be of decent size, with many exceeding a pound, making for a satisfying catch.
