Sheepshead

Sheepshead fishing near Georgetown, South Carolina, offers a unique challenge for anglers. These convict-striped fish are notorious for their bait-stealing abilities, but the rewards are well worth the effort. Focus your attention on structures like docks, pilings, and rock jetties in Winyah Bay and along the Intracoastal Waterway. Spring and early summer, when they're spawning, is a particularly good time. Fiddler crabs are the bait of choice, but barnacles scraped directly from the pilings can also be effective. The trick is to use a short, stout hook and set it quickly at the slightest nibble. The waters around the Georgetown jetties are known sheepshead hotspots but can be crowded, especially on weekends. Be prepared for some competition and strong currents.
