Sheepshead

Sheepshead are a prized catch around Hilton Head Island, known for their quirky habits and delicious table fare. These fish are masters of structure, so focus your efforts around docks, pilings, bridge supports, and oyster beds. They are particularly abundant from late winter through spring, as they gather to spawn. Local tip: Fiddler crabs are the bait of choice for Sheepshead, but they can be tricky to hook. Use a small, sharp hook and present the bait as naturally as possible. Also, be prepared for subtle bites; Sheepshead are notorious bait stealers. The Sheepshead population around Hilton Head is healthy, and you'll often find them in good sizes, but be aware of the regulations and practice responsible harvesting.
