Star Harbor's location near the Gulf Coast offers opportunities to target Sheepshead, particularly around structure in Galveston Bay. These fish are notorious for their bait-stealing abilities, so a quick hookset is crucial. Look for them congregating around docks, piers, jetties, and oyster reefs, especially those with barnacle growth – a primary food source. Spring and early summer are typically the best times to target Sheepshead, as they move into the bays to spawn. A popular technique is to use fiddler crabs or shrimp fished tight to the structure on a Carolina rig or a small jighead. A medium-heavy rod is recommended to pull them away from the structure quickly. The Galveston Fishing Pier is a good option for land-based anglers, but a boat will give you access to a wider range of productive spots. Be aware of the tide – Sheepshead fishing often improves during tidal changes.
