Skipjack Tuna
Looking to tangle with some Skipjack Tuna in the sportfishing capital of the world? Islamorada offers fantastic opportunities, especially where the Gulf Stream pushes close to the reefs. These hard-fighting tunas are abundant around offshore humps, wrecks, and color changes. The best time to target them is typically from late spring through fall, when water temperatures are warmer and baitfish are plentiful. For a good starting point, try heading out to the Islamorada Hump, a well-known spot that attracts a variety of pelagic species. Trolling small, fast-moving lures or live bait is effective. Be sure to have a good supply of chum to keep the school interested. Given the clear waters, fluorocarbon leaders can make a difference. Also, be aware of strong currents, so plan your drifts accordingly. Remember to check local regulations regarding bag limits and size restrictions before heading out.
