Smallmouth Bass

While Bedford, Indiana, isn't necessarily known as a smallmouth bass hotspot, there are still opportunities to tangle with these hard-fighting fish, especially if you're willing to explore a bit. The East Fork White River, which flows nearby, can hold smallmouth bass in its rocky stretches. Look for areas with current breaks, such as boulders or fallen trees, as these provide ambush points for smallmouth. Spring and fall are generally the best times to target smallmouth, as they are more active during these periods. Small crankbaits, tubes, and spinnerbaits can be effective lures. A local tip: Wade fishing can be a great way to access some of the more secluded areas of the river. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear and exercise caution, as the river bottom can be slippery. Also, be aware of water levels, as the river can rise quickly after heavy rains. The smallmouth in this area may not be as large as those found in other parts of the country, but they are still feisty fighters that will give you a good battle.
