Smallmouth Bass

While Merom, Indiana, isn't exactly a smallmouth bass mecca, the Wabash River does hold a population of these feisty fighters. Target rocky areas and current seams, especially around bridge pilings and submerged structures. Smallmouth fishing here is best in the fall when the water cools down and they actively feed before winter. Late spring, after the spawn, can also be productive. A local's trick is to use crayfish-imitating crankbaits or tubes bounced along the bottom. Access can be a challenge, so look for public access points near bridges or consider using a small boat or kayak to reach more remote areas. The smallmouth in the Wabash are known for their hard strikes and acrobatic jumps, so be prepared for a good fight on lighter tackle.
