Smallmouth Bass

While North Salem, Indiana, isn't necessarily known as a smallmouth bass hotspot, determined anglers can still find them if they know where to look. Your best bet will be exploring the rocky runs and deeper pools of the smaller creeks and streams that wind through the area. Smallmouth prefer cooler, moving water, so target areas with current. Spring and early summer are ideal, as the water temperatures rise and the smallmouth become more active. A key piece of local advice is to focus on areas near bridge pilings or fallen trees in the creeks; these structures provide cover and attract baitfish. Use crayfish imitations or small crankbaits to entice strikes. Don't expect trophy-sized fish; the smallmouth here are typically smaller, but their feisty attitude makes them a fun challenge on light tackle.
