While Converse isn't known as a smallmouth bass mecca, the Mississinewa River, which flows nearby, does hold a population of these feisty fish. Targeting smallmouths here requires a different approach than fishing for largemouths in the local ponds and lakes. Focus on areas with rocky bottoms, current breaks, and deeper pools. Summer and fall are the best times to pursue smallmouths in the Mississinewa, as the water levels are typically lower and the fish are more concentrated. A local tip is to access the river from bridge crossings or public access points along County Road 900 W. Wading is often necessary to reach the best fishing spots, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear and be aware of the current. Small crankbaits, tubes, and jerkbaits are effective lures for smallmouths in this river system. Also, don't overlook live bait, such as crawfish or minnows. While the smallmouths in the Mississinewa may not be huge, they are known for their aggressive strikes and fighting ability. Be prepared for a challenge, as these fish can be finicky and the river can be difficult to navigate in some areas.
