Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass in the Dune Acres, Indiana, area are primarily found in the nearshore waters of Lake Michigan and a few select inland lakes. While not as abundant as in some other regions, these smallies can be a rewarding challenge. Focus your efforts during the warmer months, from late spring through early fall. The rocky shorelines and breakwalls along Lake Michigan provide excellent habitat. Look for areas with boulders, drop-offs, and current breaks. A local's secret is to target these areas during periods of calm weather when the water is clear. Small crankbaits, tube jigs, and drop-shot rigs are effective lures. Boaters can launch from the Burns Harbor or Portage Marina. Wading anglers can find access along some of the public beaches, but be mindful of wave conditions and water safety. Lake Michigan smallmouth are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful fights, often in deeper water than river smallies, so be prepared for a different kind of battle!
