If you're looking for a smallmouth bass adventure in northern Indiana, the area around Hamlet offers some surprisingly good options, primarily in the Kankakee River. While not known as a trophy smallmouth destination, the Kankakee provides a classic river smallmouth experience. The best time to target them is late spring through early fall, when the water temperatures are warmer. Look for rocky areas, current breaks, and submerged timber. A local tip: Access to the Kankakee can be limited, so research public access points and boat launches carefully before heading out; the Kingsbury Fish and Wildlife Area offers some entry points. Wading is possible in some areas, but be aware of the current. The smallmouth here tend to be scrappy fighters, often in the 1-3 pound range, and respond well to crankbaits, spinners, and topwater lures worked along the river's structure.
