Smallmouth Bass

Hope, Indiana, might not be the first place that springs to mind for smallmouth bass, but the Flatrock River offers some surprisingly good fishing. This is a classic, winding Indiana river with rocky bottoms and plenty of cover in the form of submerged logs and overhanging trees, perfect habitat for smallies. Spring and fall are prime times. In the spring, focus on pre-spawn bass staging in deeper pools and near creek mouths as the water warms. Fall sees the fish actively feeding before winter. A local tip: wade fishing is very popular and effective here. Access points are available at several bridge crossings throughout the area. Be mindful of water levels; the Flatrock can fluctuate quickly after heavy rains, making wading difficult or dangerous. The smallmouth in the Flatrock aren't huge, averaging 1-3 pounds, but they are scrappy fighters and plentiful, offering a fun day on the water.
