If you're hunting for Smallmouth Bass in northern Indiana, don't overlook La Paz. While not necessarily known as a smallie mecca, the Yellow River, which flows nearby, offers some surprisingly good opportunities. Focus your efforts on the stretches with rocky bottoms and submerged timber, as these areas hold the most fish. Spring and early summer, particularly during the pre-spawn and spawn, are prime times to target these aggressive fighters. As the water warms in the summer, switch to early morning or late evening trips. For access, look for public access points along the Yellow River near Bremen or Plymouth, a short drive from La Paz. Be aware that the river can be shallow in spots, so a kayak or canoe can be advantageous for navigating some areas. Local tip: Smallmouth in the Yellow River are often opportunistic feeders, so try a variety of lures, including crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and soft plastics. Don't be afraid to experiment to see what they're hitting on a given day.
