Smallmouth Bass

While Laconia isn't exactly known as a smallmouth bass hotspot, determined anglers can find them in the faster-flowing sections of the Blue River and some of its larger tributaries. These bronzebacks aren't as plentiful as largemouth, but the thrill of hooking one in these clear, rocky streams is worth the effort. Fall is an excellent time to target smallmouth as they fatten up before winter. Focus on areas with current breaks, such as behind boulders or near submerged logs. Small crankbaits and tube jigs are effective, as are live crawfish. Be prepared to wade, as bank access can be limited. A good pair of wading boots and polarized sunglasses are essential. Local tip: the smallmouth in this region tend to be opportunistic feeders, so experiment with different presentations until you find what they're hitting. Remember to practice catch and release to help maintain the population.
