Smallmouth Bass

Looking for hard-fighting smallmouth in northern Indiana? Rochester offers some surprisingly good opportunities. The Tippecanoe River, which winds its way through the area, is the prime location. Focus your efforts on sections with rocky bottoms, current breaks, and submerged structure – these smallies love to ambush prey. Spring and fall are generally the most productive times, as the water temperatures are ideal and the fish are actively feeding. Summer can be good too, especially during early morning or late evening hours. A local tip: the area around the old bridge pilings just north of town is a consistent producer. Access can be a bit tricky in some spots, so be prepared to wade or use a kayak/canoe to reach the best fishing holes. Be aware of water levels; the river can fluctuate quickly after heavy rains. The smallmouth here aren't giants, averaging 12-16 inches, but they are aggressive and provide a great fight on light tackle.
