Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass fishing near Whiting, Indiana, centers around the Lake Michigan shoreline and its connecting waterways. The rocky structure along the lakefront, especially near the breakwaters and piers, provides ideal habitat for these hard-fighting fish. Spring and early summer, during and after the spawn, are excellent times to target smallmouth. As the water warms, they'll move to deeper structure. Look for them around rock piles, submerged timber, and even near the steel mills' discharge points (exercise caution and be aware of any restrictions). A local tip: use tube baits or drop-shot rigs with crawfish imitations. The smallmouth in this area can be surprisingly selective, so vary your presentation. Access is good from several public parks along the lakefront, but be prepared for crowds, especially on weekends. Smallmouth here tend to be aggressive, so hold on tight!
