If bronzebacks are your quarry, Ann Arbor and the Huron River offer some exciting opportunities for Smallmouth Bass. While not a trophy smallmouth fishery, the Huron holds a healthy population of these hard-fighting fish. Focus on the faster-flowing sections of the river, especially around rocky riffles and submerged structure. Early morning and late evening are often the best times to fish. Spring and fall, when water temperatures are moderate, tend to be the most productive. Wading is a popular way to fish the Huron, but be cautious of slippery rocks and changing water levels. Tubes, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits are all effective lure choices. A local tip: pay attention to water clarity. If the river is clear, use natural-colored baits and lighter line. If it's stained, opt for brighter colors and heavier line. Also, be aware of the numerous parks along the river, which provide easy access points.
