Smallmouth Bass

Beaver Island's rocky shorelines and clear waters create ideal conditions for smallmouth bass. These feisty fish thrive in the island's diverse aquatic environments. Early summer, after the spawn, is an excellent time to target smallmouth with topwater lures or shallow-diving crankbaits near rocky points and submerged timber. As the water warms, they'll move deeper, and techniques like drop-shotting or Carolina-rigging become effective. Fall offers another opportunity for exciting smallmouth action as they aggressively feed before winter. Look for them around deeper rock piles and drop-offs. A practical tip: Beaver Island's inland lakes, such as Lake Geneserath, also hold good populations of smallmouth and offer a change of pace from the open water of Lake Michigan. Access to many shoreline areas is available via public access points, but a boat is highly recommended to explore the island's full potential. Be prepared for changing weather conditions, as Lake Michigan can be unpredictable.
