Smallmouth Bass

If you're heading to Birch Run, Michigan, and smallmouth bass are on your mind, you're in for a treat. While Birch Run itself doesn't have a huge, well-known smallmouth fishery, its proximity to the Flint River makes it a worthwhile destination. The Flint River offers some excellent smallmouth bass fishing, particularly in the stretches with rocky bottoms and deeper pools. Spring and fall are prime times to target these hard-fighting fish, as they become more active with the cooler water temperatures. Focus your efforts around bridge pilings and any submerged structure. A local tip: wading can be productive in many sections of the river, but be mindful of water levels, especially after rainfall. Also, the smallmouth in the Flint tend to be opportunistic feeders, so a variety of lures, from crankbaits to tubes, can be effective. Don't be afraid to experiment to find what they're hitting that day!
