Largemouth Bass

Birch Run, Michigan, while not directly on the Great Lakes, provides access to numerous inland lakes and waterways holding largemouth bass. These lakes, often smaller and weedy, offer ideal habitat for largemouth. The Shiawassee River State Game Area, a short drive away, provides access to the Shiawassee River and associated flooded areas, which can be excellent for bass fishing. The best time is late spring and early summer when the bass are spawning and actively feeding in the shallows. Spinnerbaits and soft plastics worked around weed edges and submerged structure are productive. A local tip: be mindful of the regulations within the Shiawassee River State Game Area, as some areas may have restrictions on boat motors. Also, pay attention to water clarity. If the water is murky, opt for brighter colored lures.
