Smallmouth Bass

Don't overlook Bloomfield Hills as a potential smallmouth destination. While not as renowned as some of the larger Great Lakes fisheries, the area's smaller lakes and connecting waterways can hold some surprisingly good smallmouth bass. Focus on areas with rocky bottoms, drop-offs, and current breaks. These fish tend to be structure oriented. Spring and Fall are your best bets, with pre-spawn and post-spawn periods offering increased activity. Look for transition areas between shallow spawning flats and deeper water. A great local tip is to use your electronics to locate submerged rock piles or humps, as these often hold smallmouth. Smaller crankbaits, tubes, and drop-shot rigs are all effective. Be aware that some lakes might have restrictions on boat size or motor type, so check local regulations before heading out. These smallmouth can be quite feisty, and the clear water makes for exciting sight fishing opportunities.
