Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass fishing near Bridgman, Michigan, centers around the nearshore waters of Lake Michigan. While not as renowned as some other Great Lakes smallmouth destinations, the rocky structure and drop-offs along the shoreline can hold some quality fish. Summer and fall are the most productive times, as the water warms and the smallmouth move into shallower water to feed. Look for areas with rocky reefs, breakwalls, and submerged timber. Tube jigs, crankbaits, and drop-shot rigs are all effective presentations. A crucial tip: pay close attention to wind direction and wave action, as these can significantly impact water clarity and fish activity. Calm days are generally best, but a slight chop can sometimes trigger a bite. Also, be prepared for zebra mussels, which are abundant in Lake Michigan and can make wading difficult.
