Smallmouth Bass

While Durand isn't renowned for its smallmouth bass fishing, the Shiawassee River does hold a decent population, particularly in areas with rocky bottoms and current. Target areas around bridge pilings, deeper runs, and any visible structure. Late summer and early fall (August-October) are generally the most productive times. Smallmouth tend to prefer slightly cooler water, so look for shaded areas or fish early and late in the day during the warmer months. Consider using crayfish imitations, tubes, or small crankbaits. Access can be a bit limited, but the area around the M-71 bridge offers some bank fishing opportunities. Wading the river is possible in some areas, but be cautious of the current and slippery rocks. The smallmouth here aren't huge, averaging 1-2 pounds, but they are scrappy fighters and provide a fun challenge.
