Largemouth Bass

Durand, Michigan, offers surprisingly good largemouth bass fishing for its size. The Shiawassee River, which meanders through the area, is the primary draw. Focus on the backwaters, oxbows, and areas with submerged timber or heavy vegetation. Spring (late May-June) is prime time as the bass are spawning in the shallows. Use weedless lures like Texas-rigged worms or spinnerbaits. Fall can also be productive as the fish feed heavily before winter. The river can be murky, so brighter colored lures often work best. A practical tip: Launch at the Vernon Township Park and head upstream. Be aware of fluctuating water levels, especially after heavy rains, as this can impact water clarity and fishing conditions. Largemouth in this section of the Shiawassee average 2-4 pounds, with larger specimens always a possibility.
