Smallmouth Bass

If you're after some bronzeback action near Grand Blanc, Michigan, you're in luck. The Flint River, which winds its way through the area, offers some surprisingly good smallmouth bass fishing. Focus your efforts on areas with rocky bottoms, current breaks, and submerged wood. Early spring, as the water warms, and fall, when they're fattening up for winter, are prime times. However, you can find fish throughout the summer, especially during early morning or late evening hours. A great access point is near the Grand Blanc Road bridge – you can wade fish or launch a small kayak or canoe. Be aware that water levels can fluctuate, so check conditions before you head out. The smallmouth in the Flint tend to be scrappy fighters, often in the 1-3 pound range, but larger specimens are definitely possible. Don't be afraid to experiment with different lures, but tubes and crankbaits are local favorites.
