Smallmouth Bass

While Grayling is renowned for its trout, the smallmouth bass fishing in the area shouldn't be overlooked. The Au Sable River, particularly the stretches downstream from Grayling, holds a surprising number of smallmouth. These fish thrive in the river's rocky runs and deeper pools. The warmer months of summer (July-August) are prime time, as the smallmouth become more active. Focus your efforts on areas with current breaks, such as boulders and submerged logs. A local hotspot is the area near Burton's Landing, where you can wade and cast to likely holding spots. Remember that smallmouth in rivers often require a faster presentation, so be prepared to use crankbaits, spinnerbaits, or even streamer patterns. Also, be mindful of the regulations regarding catch-and-release, as the smallmouth population is carefully managed.
