Smallmouth Bass

If you're looking for some hard-fighting smallmouth, Houghton, Michigan, should be on your radar. The Keweenaw Peninsula, surrounded by Lake Superior, offers incredible smallie fishing, especially in the warmer months. Target rocky shorelines, drop-offs, and areas with submerged timber in Portage Lake and the Keweenaw Waterway. These bronzebacks are known for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs, thanks to the cold, oxygen-rich waters. The best time to fish is from late spring through fall, with the pre-spawn and post-spawn periods being particularly productive. For easy access, check out the public boat launch near the Houghton-Hancock Bridge. Be aware that Lake Superior can be unpredictable, so always check the weather forecast before heading out. A local tip: tube baits and crankbaits fished along rocky points often produce excellent results. Also, consider using heavier line and tackle, as some truly massive smallmouth inhabit these waters.
