Smallmouth Bass

Mecosta County's diverse freshwater systems provide ample opportunities for Smallmouth Bass anglers. While not known for trophy smallies, the area's rivers and lakes hold a healthy population of scrappy bronzebacks. The Muskegon River, which flows through the county, is a particularly good option, offering both wade-fishing and float-fishing opportunities. Look for rocky runs, deeper pools, and submerged wood. Summer is generally the best time to target smallmouth, especially during the early morning and late evening hours when they're most active. Tube jigs, crankbaits, and topwater lures are all effective. For lake fishing, focus on rocky points, submerged humps, and areas with current. A key tip: many of the river access points require a short hike, so pack accordingly. Also, be prepared for fluctuating water levels on the Muskegon, especially after heavy rains.
