Smallmouth Bass

While Mount Morris isn't a renowned smallmouth bass hotspot, you can still find them if you know where to look. The Flint River, which winds its way through the area, holds a population of smallmouth, although they're not as abundant as largemouth in the local lakes. Your best bet is targeting rocky areas and current breaks within the river. Summer and early fall are the most productive times for smallmouth fishing here. They tend to be more active in warmer water. Try using crayfish imitations or small crankbaits bounced along the bottom. A good access point is near the Genesee Recreation Area, where you can wade or launch a small boat. The smallmouth in the Flint River are typically smaller, averaging around 1-2 pounds, but they are scrappy fighters. Be prepared to move around and cover water to find where they're holding. The river can be murky at times, so use lures with good vibration and visibility.
